Playing interactive games, watching singing and dancing performances, tasting delicious foods… Hundreds of citizens had a fun time at the 2021 Speak Shenzhen English Corner Carnival held at the Yujie Plaza in Shekou Subdistrict, Nanshan District on the afternoon of March 27.

The carnival was hosted by the Shenzhen Municipal Foreign Affairs Office and organized by the Shenzhen Foreign Affairs Office Service Center and Yu’er Community in Shekou Subdistrict.

“The English corner provides an opportunity to practice speaking English and fall in love with the language,” said an Armenian young man who was using simple English sentences and words to encourage the children to communicate with him. “I’ve lived in four different Chinese cities so far. Shenzhen has the best English learning environment among them.” The “Speak Shenzhen” events are among the important efforts Shenzhen makes to build its international communities.

In addition to the 67 English corners that have been set up in schools, enterprises and communities across the city, a speech contest is held annually to encourage citizens to learn English and tell stories of their city to the world using English.
