Longgang court brings mock trial to Shiyaling School
    2021-04-07  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

On March 30, Longgang Court presented a mock trial at Shiyaling School, Nanwan Subdistrict, Longgang District with 300 or so students and faculty members observing, and leaders from the court and deputies of the district people’s congress in attendance.

The mock trial was based on a real case of criminal possession of drugs involving a 16-year-old defendant under the alias Zhou Yu who kept drugs in exchange of money.

With two eighth graders’ participation playing the roles of judges, the mock trial reenacted the process of prosecution, defense and reflections from the legal representative and penitence from the defendant.

During the Q&A session after the “trial,” the two “actors” shared their feelings as “judges” and students from the audience raised questions regarding the trial itself as well as those related to juvenile crime and anti-drug law.

Deputies and the school’s vice principal Tang Jianwei praised the mock trial as a real life legal and ethical lesson which “can be seen, heard and felt.”

They said that the mock trial helped students feel the majesty of the law and courts and raised students’ consciousness of rule of law.

After the mock trial, the juvenile criminal trial team of Longgang Court presented law education handbooks that interpreted law through classic criminal cases.

Since 2017 the Longgang Court has held 42 “Mock Trials Entering Campus” activities in primary and secondary schools in Longgang District and Dapeng New Area, with tens of thousands of people benefiting from the program.
