A video of an Italian guy playing duet with his neighbor went viral on TikTok recently. Giorgio Lo Porto who posted the video had moved from Italy to London, and in February he was attracted by someone playing the piano next door.

Then, Lo Porto posted a video on TikTok about his new neighbor — and their unbelievable piano talent. The post began a series of clips over the next month that showed the duo’s relationship playing out in the form of two pianos separated by one wall.

One day, Lo Porto wrote his neighbor a message on a whim, asking him or her to play “My Heart Will Go On.” The second day, he heard the familiar tune from the other side of the wall. Then, Lo Porto invited his neighbor to join him in a duet. At their appointed time, Lo Porto began to play “River Flows in You,” in the middle of which he stopped, and waited for the neighbor’s response.

Seconds later, music came from the other side of the wall, and the video of their first duet got 1.7 million views on TikTok. Since then, Lo Porto will play a duet with his neighbor each weekend. He became more curious about his neighbor, whom he finally met a few days later.

It turns out, his neighbor’s name was Emil and he was 78 years old, originally from Poland. His wife had passed away in December from COVID-19 and the apartment in which he was staying was a temporary accommodation until he would sell his house. The only consolation left to Emil was his piano. The reason he was playing at 2 p.m. in a duet with Giorgio was because his wife used to listen to him play at that time.

Moved by his neighbor’s story, Lo Porto wrote his first song named “Dear Emil.”

“When I wrote this piece I started picturing Emil’s life. A 78-year-old widower who lost the love of his life because of this stupid virus, spends day alone at home due to lockdown, looking forward to playing her favorite piano song at 2 p.m. every weekend. Until a note appeared on his door. A letter showing that he was heard, and not alone. A new friendship started.”

Giorgio shared on March 14 that he’d received word that Emil had passed away in his sleep. “And now he is reunited with his wife,” Lo Porto said. “Dear Emil,” Lo Porto wrote. “I knew very little about you, but you changed my life. You gave me back my passion, and we shared that with the world. You’ll be in my heart. “
