‘Green wave’ roads reach 520km
    2021-04-15  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

AS of now, Shenzhen has 574 “green waves” involving 1,742 intersections with traffic lights and the total road length has reached 520 kilometers, sources from Shenzhen’s traffic police bureau said Monday.

A “green wave” means the coordination of a series of signals that allows a smooth traffic flow over many crossroads. As a result, vehicles traveling at a certain speed on a trunk road could pass through several intersections at a time and thus reduce fuel consumption.

The implementation of intersections along “green waves” for traffic needs to meet the following requirements:

First, the distance between one intersection and the other next to it should be less than 800 meters. The distance between each intersection along a “green wave” is preferably equal or in multiples.

Second, each intersection’s optimal cycle interval should be close to or equal to a multiple relationship.

Third, the intersection should be less subject to interruptions, like entrances and exits of shopping malls and crosswalks without traffic lights.

Fourth, traffic at the intersections is not overwhelmed.

For example, a section of Heping Road is installed with “green wave” signals. The 2.6-kilometer road section, starting west from Fulong Road and ending north at Shiqing Boulevard, has eight signalized intersections. The investigation shows the travel time by vehicles from east to west has been reduced from 580 seconds to 396 seconds after enacting “green wave” traffic. Meanwhile, the driving time from west to east has dropped from 550 seconds to 296 seconds, a 46-percent drop. Cars driving from west to east will only stop once from the previous five times.

The Shenzhen traffic police also reminded drivers not to go over speed limits along the “green waves,” or they would be stopped by red signals all the way. (Xia Yuanjie)
