鹅厂
    2021-04-15  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Meaning:

“鹅” means “goose,” and “厂” means “factory.” Literally meaning “a goose farm,” this term, however, is used by Chinese netizens as a nickname for tech giant Tencent. The nickname comes from the company’s QQ Penguin (企鹅;qǐ’é), the adorable brand mascot behind Tencent QQ. The instant messaging platform for PC and mobile devices has grown to be one of China’s biggest social platforms among young users, and it was the company’s first business.

Example:

A: 你女儿大学毕业了吗?

Nǐ nǚr dàxué bìyè le ma?

Has your daughter graduated from the university?

B: 去年就毕业了。现在在鹅厂上班。

Qùnián jiù bìyè le。Xiànzài zài échǎng shàngbān。

Xuéxí yīdìng bú ràngnǐ cāoxīn,wǒ jìdé tā zhǎng le ge jiǔbāwǔ tóu。

She graduated last year. Now she’s working for Tencent.

A: 真让人羡慕。她从小就很优秀。

Zhēn ràng rén xiànmù。Tā cóngxiǎo jiù hěn yōuxiù。

That’s really enviable. She’s been outstanding since childhood.
