Netflix show to teach subscribers how to fall asleep
    2021-04-16  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

NETFLIX’S new docuseries will attempt to teach its subscribers how not to watch Netflix.

The streamer has teamed with the popular meditation app Headspace for a show titled “Headspace Guide to Sleep.”

The animated series has seven episodes revealing “the science behind a healthy night’s sleep and provides tips on how to get the best sleep you’ve ever had. Each 15-minute episode explores a different aspect of our relationship with sleep — such as insomnia, stress, our phones and even sleeping pills — followed by a guided wind-down designed to help you on your journey to a better sleep.”

It’s a rather ironic title from the media content company that introduced the world to the habit of bringing full seasons of television shows. In 2017, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings declared the streamer’s biggest competitor was, in fact, sleep. “You get a show or a movie you’re really dying to watch, and you end up staying up late at night, so we actually compete with sleep,” Hastings said. “And we’re winning.”

One of the biggest causes of modern-day insomnia is too much screen time at night — including watching TV. It will be interesting to see if the Netflix series explicitly recommends watching less of, well, itself.

The show from Vox Media Studios is a follow-up to another Netflix show, “Headspace Guide to Meditation.”

Sleep problems have reportedly increased during the pandemic, with one poll suggesting a 37-percent increase in insomnia issues during the past year in the United States. Rival HBO Max, meanwhile, teamed with Headspace’s meditation app rival Calm for the show “A World of Calm.”(SD-Agencies)
