A CONSTRUCTION company in Shenzhen has reconciled with residents in a housing estate over noise pollution and agreed to compensate reasonable amounts of medical fees to some residents during a hearing at the Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court recently. The second-instance trial attracted more than 1 million online views. The 132 residents of the Fumin Xincun housing estate, which is located at the intersection of Caitian and Fumin Road in Futian District, brought the Second Construction Projects Co. Ltd. of China Construction No. 3 Engineering Bureau, the contractor, and Shenzhen Property Development Group, the project investor, to court over the noise pollution. Since the construction inside the housing estate started in April 2019, the contractor oftentimes worked overtime and was administratively punished by the environmental authority for a couple of times. A resident surnamed Zhang living closest to the project said some residents suffered from tinnitus, hearing loss, headache, dizziness and rapid heartbeat due to the sustained, frequent and high-decibel noises the contractor made. Some were forced to find other places to live or bought noise-reducing devices. (Han Ximin) |
