Upon arriving at the Sinolink Primary School in Luohu District, visitors are quickly attracted by the loud cheers from the school’s playground. A few soccer matches are going on. The players’ movements and their team spirit are impressive. “In the past, when the kids fell, they cried. Now they just stand up and continue the game,” school director Xiong Youping said. “We teach the kids to accept failure in the same way we teach them to be a winner.” Founded in 1999, the Sinolink Primary School has been offering education that highlights reading and physical education. It also features small classes, school-based curriculum, immersive English teaching, parents’ involvement in school affairs as well as a high-level teachers’ team. In the grade four English classes, students are divided into groups of four. This is a part of the school’s small-class teaching tradition to allow each student to enjoy sufficient educational resources. “When students answer questions in the class, their intended listeners are not the teacher, but their peers,” said Xiong. “That’s how we can achieve student-centered education and bring forth true learning.” A series of school-based curriculum has also been developed in the school, including etiquette courses, project-based learning, reading courses, functional writing courses, programming and many others. In addition, the school also offers various events at its library, a red building with designs inspired by “Alice in Wonderland.” (Lin Lin) |
