Local movie among top 10 box office hits
    2021-04-23  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A LOCAL film, “The Wild Life,” which has made 557 million yuan (US$85 million) at the box office, is listed among the top 10 highest-grossing movies on the Chinese mainland.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the domestic box office in 2021 surpassed 20.1 billion yuan, Shenzhen Economic Daily reported.

“Hi, Mom” ranks first with more than 5.4 billion yuan at box office. Among the top 10 movies, only “Godzilla Vs. Kong” is imported.

“The Wild Life,” part of the animated series “Boonie Bears,” was produced by Shenzhen-based entertainment enterprise Fantawild.

Starting this year, Shenzhen has implemented a plan to promote the quality of film production in line with strengthening the city's cultural factor.

There are more than 16,000 companies in Shenzhen’s film industry.

According to February data, Shenzhen ranked third place among Chinese cities with 211-million-yuan box office recorded during the Spring Festival holiday this year.

Earlier reports also showed that two Shenzhen joint venture-produced films earned Oscars nominations.

Chinese youth drama film “Better Days,” which was jointly produced by Shenzhen-based China Wit Media Co. Ltd. and other producers, has been nominated for Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards.

The animated “Wolfwalkers” which was jointly produced by Shenzhen-based Hongxi Media Co. Ltd. and Irish animation film studio Cartoon Saloon, was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film at the Oscars.

“Shenzhen is a city with the strongest driving force for the movie industry and greatest potential across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area,” said Zhang Zhongming, manager of Shenzhen Film Studio Co. Ltd.
