Merchiston International School (MIS) in Longhua District introduced Dr. Murray Tod, the new head of the school to media on Friday.

After a thorough and professional search, recommended by Saxton Bampfylde, a global executive search and leadership consulting firm, MIS Chairman of the Board of Governors appointed Dr. Tod as the new head. Over the last six months, Andrew Hunter, interim head of the school and who was the ex-headmaster of Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh in Scotland for 20 years, has worked closely with Dr. Tod to help him become familiar with the school’s affairs.

Dr. Tod was born and raised in Edinburgh and his mother was a teacher at Merchiston Castle School. Graduating from the University of Glasgow with MA and Ph.D. degrees in history, he has over 20 years of teaching experience and comes to MIS from Epsom College in Malaysia, where he was the headmaster of the school.

According to Dr. Tod, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is currently one of the most active and rapidly developing regions in the global economy. As the area becomes more internationally driven, the demand for international talents and schools is increasing. British education, as one of the most recognized education systems in the world, is gradually becoming more popular for families in China. “Merchiston International School may be a ‘young school’ but we are based on very old traditions and we are aiming high for everyone — we are a happy, inclusive, caring and exceptional British international school.”

Dr. Tod passionately promised to build upon the superb work of MIS, which will continue to uphold the educational philosophy of “Ready Ay Ready” by adhering to the British boarding system, improving support and guidance for students, and practicing holistic educational theory. “MIS will move forward to develop personalized courses that meet the learning demands of Shenzhen and the world. This will lay a solid foundation for the future of MIS students and help them become excellent global citizens.”

As the first British boarding international school in Shenzhen, MIS uses a unique combination of the British National Curriculum and Chinese culture for students aged 4-18 (Early Years to Year 13). Founded three years ago, the school has already achieved remarkable academic results. This year, the Year 13 graduating students have received offers from the top 30 universities in the world.
