Why you look better in the mirror than photos
    2021-05-25  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Unlike our looks in photos, our face in the mirror is what we are most familiar and comfortable with. It’s a reflection, so it shows how we look like in reverse.

“We see ourselves in the mirror all the time — you brush your teeth, you shave, you put on makeup,” Pamela Rutledge, director of the Media Psychology Center, told The Atlantic. “You have that familiarity. Familiarity breeds liking. You’ve established a preference for that look of your face.”

Because we have got used to our looks in the mirror, we feel uncomfortable looking at photos – a different angle to observe ourselves.

If your face is perfectly symmetrical, it will not appear weird in photos.

But nobody has a perfectly symmetrical face. Most people will part their hair at one side. Most have one eye slightly bigger than the other and a brow curvier than the other. When they smile, most people open their mouth wider at one side. Most have a feature, like a mole or scar, on one side of the face.

So if your nose goes 2mm to the left, then when your image is the other way round, it appears to be 4mm to the right of where you’re expecting it to be.

When you add all these things together, when you see your face in reverse to how you expect it to be, it’s you, but not you. And that makes you feel uncomfortable.

To capture a moment, the camera also needs to turn a 3D image into 2D, which fails to reflect your face in reality, like your high nose bridge. In contrast, the mirror can do the trick. In addition, the camera lens will distort your face.

Because of the proximity of your face to the camera, the lens can distort certain features, making them look larger than they are in real life.

If you have a soft round face, photos can flatten your features and further distort the “real” you.

No matter how many factors you want to blame for your crappy pictures, it all boils down to psychology.

Psychological research reveals that we tend to believe that we look more favorable than we actually are.

The researchers took pictures of study participants and using a computerized procedure, produced more attractive and less attractive versions of those pictures.

The subjects received both the original and the photoshopped photos, and were required to pick the ones they thought had not been changed. It is concluded that the people tended to select an attractively enhanced one.

【对称的】 duìchèn de symmetrical balanced in size, shape, and relative position of parts
