SUSTech ranks 11th in research capability

SOUTHERN University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) took 11th place among all the Chinese mainland universities in its research capability, according to Nature Index 2021 China published by Nature magazine recently.

Nature Index 2021 China, summarizing China’s research output and collaboration in the previous year, recognized the country’s successes in space exploration, quantum technologies, cutting-edge chemistry, and included tables listing its leading institutions in various branches of natural science.

SUSTech joined the rankings in the top 10 in physics research.

Based on the output of research articles published in 82 high-quality natural science journals from Dec. 1, 2019, to Nov. 30, 2020, namely in the number of articles and how much they were shared, the magazine released a table of the 100 leading Chinese research institutions. Among them, 89 are higher learning institutions.

The top 10 universities, in terms of article output, are University of Science and Technology of China, Peking University, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing University, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Fudan University, Sun Yat-sun University and Nankai University.

The number of articles from SUSTech in 2020 was 597, ranking 47th among the universities in the world. The research capability at Shenzhen University took the 34th place among mainland universities.

Six Hong Kong universities joined the top 100 Chinese research institutions. They are the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (24), the University of Hong Kong (32), the City University of Hong Kong (34), the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (54) and Hong Kong Baptist University (100).
