A team composed of three students from Shenzhen MSU-BIT University (SMBU) was designated as a finalist, winning the second place of the 2021 Mathematical Contest in Modeling/ Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (MCM/ICM), according to SMBU.

It is the first time for SMBU to win this honor. In addition, SMBU’s other teams won four second prizes (Honorable Mention) and five third prizes (Successful Participant) in MCM/ICM.

This year’s MCM/ICM attracted over 26,000 teams around the world. Organized by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), MCM/ICM is believed to be the only international mathematical modeling contest.

In another development, SMBU’s teams won one national first prize, one provincial second prize, three provincial third prizes, and five excellent prizes in the Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling (CUMCM) competition.

CUMCM attracted 45,680 teams from 1,470 universities globally including the U.S., the U.K. and Malaysia.

Also, a total of eight students from SMBU won prizes in the 12th National Mathematics Competition for College Students.

SMBU held an award ceremony last Thursday for the winners, attended by Li Hezhang, rector of SMBU, Sergey Shakhray, first vice rector of SMBU, Zhu Dijian, Party secretary and vice rector of SMBU, and teachers and staff representatives.

Li said at the ceremony that although SMBU hasn’t been established for a long time, many students have already achieved great results in competitions of different fields such as mathematics, material research, economics and Russian.
