How does our band start?

Henry Wu, G9, RDF International School

Have you ever thought about creating a band with your friends?

It is not for any grand dream; I just want to take a little time to relax after a long time of the study.

One year ago, my buddy Harry found me and said, “I heard that you can play the drums, and I plan to create a band. Would you like to join?” I said yes. That was how this story began.

Our band is called “Particular,” because we hope our band could be unique since we have a picky taste for music. Soon, we invited another two friends to join us, and we had four members in total, including Harry(singer), Rain(guitarist), Jack (pianist), and Henry (me, the drummer). We are a group of people who want to show our ability to rock and impact the school. That’s why we huddle together.

At first, we all made mistakes that we thought were pieces of cake. But we were wrong. The first issue we met was cost. Some equipment was very expensive, and who was going to pay for that was the big question!

Initially, we borrowed equipment from other bands when we practiced or gave performances. However, we all knew this situation was only temporary, and we were working on raising money to buy our own equipment.

In addition, we had another problem, which was the low attendance rate. As we were all at school, we had our study tasks to finish, and some of us even had to prepare for academic competitions or attend other programs. That’s why our progress was sluggish. To improve this situation, we decided that members in the band must balance their time and spare at least three hours per week to practice as a band.

At present, our band is running well, and we even held a small concert last month. We plan to perform for the School Honors Day in August this year, which is an accomplishment for us. I appreciate my buddies.

Although we lost a lot, no one regrets and I never heard of anyone ever wanting to give up. I can feel enthusiasm because we love and enjoy working together, and I believe we will be the most influential people at the school in the future.

Everything is hard at the beginning, but please hold on and don’t give up easily, even if nobody cares about you or people think you are a joke. Face it and follow what you believe, then you will succeed sooner or later.
