The Shenzhen-based tech giant, Tencent, unveiled its wheel-legged robot, named Ollie, on Thursday. It is the latest achievement to come from Tencent’s Robotics X Lab, which announced the project to make this first multimodal robot three months ago. Ollie has a wheeled structure and leg ability, allowing the robot to move fast, adapt to uneven terrain, complete jumping movements and other actions. Video clips released by Tencent showed that Ollie, with a minimum height of 35 cm, can jump up to 40-cm steps, reaches a height up to 60 cm and can complete 360-degree flips and backflips. With a five-link structure and a third leg, Ollie can maintain its stability when going over uneven surfaces, overcoming external interference and facing different challenges. In addition to its ability to keep balance, the robot also has the capacity of trajectory planning, meaning that Ollie can plan its approach before going up against challenges. Zhang Zhengyou, director of Robotics X Lab, recently presented the breakthroughs the lab has reached in the robotics area at the 2021 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation.
