As a founding president of Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Fan took the lead in implementing an enterprise-based operation system, which integrates research and production. The research team, with only five members at the very beginning, has grown to have 4,326 staffers by now. The current team is dedicated to cutting-edge scientific fields, such as neuroscience, synthetic biology, materials science and artificial intelligence.

The total number of enterprises the institute incubated has reached 1,188. Among them, 52 enterprises have a market value of more than 100 million yuan (US$15 million). Meanwhile, the total number of patent applications by the institute has reached 10,951.
