More exhibitions celebrate the CPC centenary
    2021-07-02  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Ding Cong’s caricatures

In December 1941, Hong Kong was occupied by Japanese invaders, stranding more than 800 patriotic intellectuals there, including caricaturist Ding Cong, painter He Xiangning and journalist Zou Taofen. The Guangdong People’s Guerrilla Force Against Japanese Aggression led by the CPC then escorted those people back to the Chinese mainland. A church in Baishilong in today’s Longhua District in Shenzhen was the first stop for the rescued intellectuals.

In 1987, Ding (1916-2009) created a 10-piece caricature series about this rescue experience, exhibited them at the Shenzhen Art Museum in 1994 and later donated them to the museum. Ding reflected optimism in the caricatures which are vivid and witty.

The rescue embodies the CPC’s care for intellectuals and the guerrillas’ brave spirit. More artworks on the rescue that are on loan from other domestic art museums are also on display.

Paintings, calligraphy, photography

Two exhibitions are on display, “Along With the People: Guan Shanyue’s Paintings Around 1949” (until Nov. 20) and “From Old Revolutionary Bases to Special Economic Zone” (until July 11). Master Guan (1912-2000) was famous for his grand landscape paintings and flower-and-bird paintings. In the 1940s, he painted a lot about starving people’s lives in China to protest against Kuomintang. From the 1950s to the 1970s, Guan explored using landscape paintings to reflect the new social life in China.

“From Old Revolutionary Bases to Special Economic Zone” features 300 revolution-themed paintings, photos and calligraphic works by local artists who visited several revolutionary sites around the country in April and May.

‘100 Works for 100 Years’

Printmaking had been used as a means of revolution for Chinese people to fight against domestic warlords and foreign invaders before 1949. The “100 Works for 100 Years” exhibition reflects how the CPC led the Chinese people to struggle for national liberation and move forward from misery towards glory.

‘Towards Glory’

Books on the CPC history are also on display for visitors to read at the exhibition.

Old and new Chinese currency

Old Chinese banknotes and coins issued and used in the revolutionary bases and liberated areas led by the CPC from 1927 to 1949, as well as the renminbi issued after 1949 are on display at an exhibition. These old currencies had witnessed Chinese people’s revolutionary battles in various periods before the founding of the People’s Republic of China, and the renminbi, including the e-CNY (China’s digital currency), is playing an ever greater important role in the global financial market.
