Serbian athlete 3rd to test positive for COVID upon arrival in Tokyo
    2021-07-06  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A MEMBER of the Serbian men’s rowing team is the third Olympic athlete to test positive for COVID-19 upon arrival in Tokyo.

The man, who is in his 30s, was screened at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, about 18 kilometers away from the Olympic Village. He was taken to a nearby medical facility, and the other four members of his team are isolating at a separate facility.

“Since they are expected to be isolated for two weeks, the Serbian rowing team is unlikely to come to Nanto for training before the Games,” Takashi Ikeda, a sports official in the city of Nanto, where the Serbian training camp is scheduled to be held, said Sunday.

Two members of the Ugandan Olympic team were the first athletes to test positive for COVID-19 upon their June arrival in Tokyo.

The Serbian team will be isolated until July 18, five days before the July 23 start of the Games. None of the personnel who work for the Nanto city government had direct contact with the Serbian athletes, Japanese media reported.
