8 Shenzhen athletes to compete at Tokyo Olympics

EIGHT athletes from Shenzhen will compete at the Tokyo Olympics to be held between July 23 and Aug. 8, according to a report of Shenzhen Evening News on Monday.

The eight athletes are Liu Hong (race walking), Ou Yushan (gymnastics), Wang Qianyi (synchronized swimming), Song Yiling (women’s all-around rock climbing), Tang Muhan (women’s freestyle), Yu Liyan (women’s butterfly stroke), Liang Meiyu (hockey) and Huang Bokai (pole vault).

Liu Hong, born in 1987, is the world record holder of the Olympic 20-kilometer distance with a time of 1:24:38, set in 2015 and she is the 2016 Olympic 20-kilometers race walking gold medalist.

First-timer Ou Yushan, born in 2004 in Guangxi, will join the Chinese individual artistic gymnastics team. She is the 2019 Junior World all-around bronze medalist and team and floor exercise silver medalist.

Wang Qianyi, born in 1997, is a Chinese synchronized swimmer. She won China’s first ever gold medal and a silver medal at the 2017 World Aquatics World Championships.

Song Yiling, born in Shenzhen in 2001, has broken the women’s Speed Climbing world record with a time of 7.101 seconds in 2019.

Swimmer Tang Muhan, born in 2003, ranked 15th place in the women’s 1,500 meters freestyle during the World Junior Championships 2019. She competes in 1,500 meters freestyle and 800 meters freestyle. During the qualifiers for the Tokyo Olympics in the second half of 2020, Tang ranked first place in 400 meters freestyle, second in 1,500 meters freestyle and second in 200 meters freestyle. In the 2021 Olympic qualifiers, she ranked second in 400 meters freestyle.

Another swimmer, Yu Liyan, born in 2000 and grew up in Shenzhen, won second place in 200 meters butterfly stroke at the National Swimming Championship in 2020 with her personal best of 2 minutes and 6:83 seconds. At the Tokyo Olympics qualifiers in 2021, Yu got second place in butterfly stroke with 2 minutes and 7:03 seconds.

Liang Meiyu, born in 1994, competed with the China women’s national field hockey team during the 2012 Summer Olympics. She also won a silver medal as a member of the Chinese team at the 2014 Asian Games and competed at the 2020 Women’s FIH Pro League. (Han Ximin)
