Young musicians join hands for a night of classics
    2021-07-08  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Chinese violinist Lao Li and pianist Yuan Jie will play Sarasate’s “Carmen Fantasy, Op. 25,” Kreisler’s “Tambourin Chinois,” Beethoven’s “Violin Sonata No. 9, Op. 47,” as well as several Chinese pieces. Yuan will also perform Chopin’s “Andante Spianato and Grande Polonaise Brillante, Op. 22.”

Ever since Lao’s debut at the age of 13 playing Mendelssohn’s “Violin Concerto in E Minor” with the Beijing Symphony Orchestra as a soloist, she has been a big star in China. A graduate of the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, the New England Conservatory of Music and Reina Sofia Conservatory, she is recognized as a great violinist of our generation — a truly exciting, passionate and versatile artist. She has appeared as soloist with national and international leading orchestras, including the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, the New York Hudson Valley Symphony Orchestra, and many others. She has collaborated with such famous musicians as Zubin Mehta, Benjamin Zander, Hugh Wolff, Itzhak Perlman, Jorge Ledezma Bradley, Chen Xieyang, Zheng Xiaoying, Mark Gibson and others.

In addition to her performances and projects, Lao is a devoted teacher. She is currently a violin faculty member at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. She has translated Zakhar Bron’s advanced violin literature “The Art of Etudes” into Chinese along with a violin study book with her detailed explanations. She constantly teaches masterclasses in China, the United States and Europe.

Lao also devotes herself to promoting Chinese music. During her performance and teaching residency at Bucknell University in the United States, she performed famous Chinese pieces composed by Li Huanzhi, Tan Dun and Bao Yuankai at several concerts.

Yuan was educated at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, Texas Christian University and Lake Como International Piano Academy. He was praised by the New York Times as saying, “his perfect technique and musicality no doubt make him a leader in this generation of pianists.”

As a prize-winner of Cliburn, Busoni, Casagrande, Bechstein, Hamamatsu, Crescendo, Seattle, and Hong Kong international piano competitions, he has performed concerts in over 40 countries and regions including performances in Carnegie Hall, the Vienna Wiener Musikverein, the Frankfurt Opera House, the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing and many others. He has also worked with the New York Philharmonic, Dresden Philharmonic, China National Symphony Orchestra, and many others orchestras. He is director of the Piano Department at Harbin Conservatory of Music and guest professor in several domestic and foreign conservatories.
