Shenzhen Yadi School, a nine-year school located near the Dapeng Bay, has initiated a moon-themed cross-discipline program since last year. According to Gao Qing, principal of the school, the program aims to draw from different disciplines a common educational element, such as is found in the spirit of science, the love for one’s homeland and the confidence in one’s own culture, and integrate such an element into the teaching of the disciplines. Gao said that, the moon-themed program has involved more than 1,000 students and parents and has made moon observation a habit for many students. “We have organized monthlong observations of the moon to bring out students’ curiosity, kindle their passion for scientific exploration and develop their awareness of teamwork,” said Gao. Through the program, the first and second graders are able to describe how the moon changes its shape, the third and four graders can summarize rules for how the moon changes its shape, and the fifth and sixth graders can find out through scientific analysis why the moon changes. In addition to gaining a better understanding about the moon, the students have also created diverse works under the program, which ranged from literature to programming, designing and engineering. The moon-themed program has also been introduced to other primary schools in Dapeng New Area. Under the program, a total of 208 works, including science fiction, calligraphy and handicrafts, have been created by students from seven schools. According to Gao, they will make more effort to further the cross-subject program, and the next theme will be “the ocean.” (Lin Lin) |
