Zhu, Zhao named China’s flag-bearers
    2021-07-19  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

WOMEN’S volleyball team skipper Zhu Ting and taekwondo athlete Zhao Shuai have been named as the Chinese delegation’s flag-bearers at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympic Games, the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC) announced late Saturday.

In a statement posted on its social media account, the COC said that flag-bearers of the Chinese delegation at the Olympics’ opening ceremony have always attracted major attention and been a hot topic of discussion.

“Taking representation of the athletes and competition schedule into consideration, the delegation has confirmed its flag-bearers following widespread consultation and prudent consideration,” read the statement.

Zhu helped team China claim the Olympic gold medal in volleyball in Rio five years ago, while Zhao made history by winning China’s first Olympic gold in men’s taekwondo when he triumphed in the 58kg category at the Rio Olympics.

Meanwhile, four squads of the Chinese Olympic delegation, including the Chinese table tennis team, walked out of the Narita International Airport late Saturday, after going through strict COVID-19 testing procedures.

Liu Guoliang, president of China Table Tennis Association, who has led the all-time leading Chinese paddlers to a clean sweep in the latest three previous Olympic Games, expressed understanding of the anti-COVID measures of the organizers of Tokyo 2020.

“It takes a little longer than before, but the trip is fairly smooth and my whole team is in good condition and ready for title challenges,” said the 45-year-old Liu.

He was echoed by Jia Xiuquan, head coach of the Chinese women’s soccer team for the postponed Olympic Games.

“It’s normal under this special situation during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Jia said. “For this purpose, the requirements are the stricter the better.”

The second wave of the Chinese athletes, coaches and staff arrived in Tokyo a week ahead of the Games, with most of them going to check in the athletes’ village.

Jia’s team began training in Japan with a recovery session yesterday.

Jia told Xinhua that the team was in good spirits despite their lengthy journey, and that they were looking forward to fully demonstrating the team’s capability in an effort to achieve a good result. China is drawn in Group F along with Brazil, the Netherlands and Zambia, with the team’s first game against Brazil on Wednesday.   (Xinhua)
