Experts predict whale may leave in autumn
    2021-07-20  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE Bryde’s whale nicknamed “Little Bryde,” which is seen foraging in Dapeng Bay in the past weeks, is estimated to leave Dapeng Bay in autumn when its prey in the area becomes scarce, according to a recent forum on marine creature protection and research organized by Dapeng authorities.

Experts attending the forum thought the risks of the 8-meter-long Little Bryde will increase if it stays long in the coastal waters.

The fish species in Dapeng Bay happen to be the favorite “staple food” for Bryde’s whales. Little Bryde chases and follows the fish to Dapeng Bay. However, when its prey changes and dwindles in fall, Little Bryde may leave by itself, according to experts at the forum. The experts also stated that Dapeng Bay’s current fish supply is abundant.

Experts raised concerns about the risks Bryde’s whales will face once the fishing ban in the South China Sea is lifted Aug. 16. The whales will be vulnerable to many stressors and threats, including vessel strikes, water pollution and ocean noise.

Noise from ships and drones spectators used to film Little Bryde may affect its psychology and disrupt its regular breathing patterns. Experts suggested drones should be at a distance of 10-30 meters away when filming Little Bryde, or at least 50 meters for larger drones.

Bryde’s whales are found in warm, temperate waters including the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans. Some Bryde’s whales make short seasonal migratory movements, while others do not migrate, making them unique among migrating baleen whales. (Han Ximin)
