Does technology make our lives more complicated?
    2021-07-21  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

David Wang, G10, RDF International School

Admittedly, technology has developed rapidly since the beginning of last century. More and more inventions have impacted people’s lives, and they make our lives more convenient. Some people think technology has made our lives complicated even though they are designed to make our lives simpler, and I agree with that.

To begin with, some technologies require us to have specific skills to use them, such as new functions in computers and mobile phones. These devices are designed to let us access things quickly, but they are not easy to use.

We need to have some knowledge about the applications and the hardware. Otherwise, we’re unable to use them correctly. For example, as a student, I often use laptop computers to write papers and prepare presentation slides. Though it is easy to use my computer to type, it isn’t easy to beautify the design of the slides. I need to find the booklets and search for the options inside them. Sometimes I cannot even find the menu of the functions inside the interface of the software. Therefore, if we don’t know how to use the technology, it is not easy to use them well.

In addition, the development of technology makes people do more processes than they did before, even if the initial purpose of the designs is to make our lives easier. Now, electronics technology has been well developed, and many things can be done with electronic devices such as computers and smartphones. However, we usually need to log in to the applications before we use them. For example, if we are going to purchase something using the Internet, we need to memorize our shopping accounts and passwords. Sometimes we also need to type in verification codes. After choosing the commodities to buy, we need to type in our bank accounts and passwords to make payments. Those programs are designed to let us buy things quickly, but it is tedious to use to some aspects.

In summary, some technologies are complex in their essences, and some of them are difficult to use. They make our lives complex.
