Man flees from mandatory Australian COVID-19
    2021-07-23  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A MAN in Perth, Australia, escaped mandatory quarantine at a hotel by scaling down a rope made of bound sheets from a window on the 4th floor, police said Tuesday.

After arriving on the west coast of the city on a flight from Brisbane, the man was denied his application for entry under the state’s COVID-19 border rules.

The man was asked to leave the state within 48 hours and taken to a hotel for temporary quarantine, but just before noon Tuesday “he climbs out of a window in the room on the fourth floor using a rope made of sheets and flee the area,” Western Australia Police said in a Facebook post.

Police posted photos of the temporary rope hanging from a window on the top floor of the brick building down to the street.

Police arrested the man across the city about eight hours later, accusing him of disobeying instructions and giving “false/, misleading information.” They did not reveal the man’s identity except to say he was 39 years old and tested negative for COVID, nor did they give any reason for his alleged actions.

Australia has recorded far fewer cases of coronavirus and deaths (32,120 cases in total, 1,360 active cases and 915 deaths as of July 20, according to Johns Hopkins University’s tracker) than many other developed countries, partly because it closed national and internal borders and introduced mandatory hotel quarantine for anyone arriving from abroad or — during an outbreak — another state.

However, more than 13 million Australians in lockdown are concerned about the spread of the Delta variant.

The policy has brought with it a number of escapes, including a woman who this month was accused of having climbed down two balconies and kicked a door in to avoid quarantine in Cairns in the Northeast of the city. (SD-Agencies)
