A NUMBER of scholars from Shenzhen have been selected as preliminary academician candidates for the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), according to a list released by the national academy for natural sciences Sunday, Shenzhen Economic Daily reported.

Among the candidates are Xia Keqing with Southern University of Science and Technology, Zheng Hairong with Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Huang Sanwen with the Agricultural Genomics Institute at Shenzhen of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and Kang Feiyu with Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School.

The CAS has identified 191 preliminary academician candidates this year, among whom 35 are in mathematics and physics, 29 in chemistry, 36 in life science and medical science, 27 in earth science, 26 in information technical science and 38 in technological science. It plans to admit 73 new academicians this year.

Xia Keqing, a candidate for the mathematics and physics division, is a chair professor at Southern University of Science and Technology.

Xia boasts distinctive academic records in the study of turbulent thermal convection and has revealed the important essential laws of thermal turbulence by using creative experimental techniques and statistical analysis methods.

Zheng Hairong with the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is one of the youngest candidates on the list.

Zheng, 43, led his team to work with a Shanghai company for nearly 10 years to develop China’s first Magneto Lumina 3 Tesla (3T) superconducting magnetic resonance imaging system, which has been installed and used in more than 100 high-level hospitals in China.

Huang Sanwen with the Agricultural Genomics Institute at Shenzhen of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences has carried out many research projects in cucumber genetic map construction, cell genetic map construction, gender expression research, disease resistance research and quality research.

Huang has an integrated genetic and cytogenetic map of cucumbers and his research on hybrid potatoes has been reported in a paper published on renowned academic journal Cell on June 24 this year.

Kang Feiyu, dean of Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, mainly engages in the study of new carbon materials and energy and environmental materials.
