Enjoy classical music from ‘Tom and Jerry’
    2021-08-05  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

We all have childhood memories related to “Tom and Jerry” and the slapstick humor surrounding the odd relationship between the cat and the mouse.

Meanwhile, we also appreciate the work of musical director Scott Bradley, who infused the straightforward plot with complex scores combining jazz, classical and pop music. Liszt, Chopin, and Strauss prove to be quite fitting to the characters’ actions.

Now a Chinese quintet comprising of pianist Liu Tian, violinists Zhu Hanhan and Li Jianing, viola player Gu Jiawen and cellist Wang Ante will give a night of classical pieces that have been featured in “Tom and Jerry.”

The program will include “Frühlingsstimmen, Op. 410” and “The Blue Danube” by Johann Strauss II, Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” Liszt’s “Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2,” Mozart’s “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, K. 525,” as well as more easy-listening tunes, such as “The Skaters’ Waltz, Op. 183” and the “Barber of Seville” scores.

Liszt’s “Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2” appears in “The Cat Concerto” in which Tom is solemnly playing the piano which is actually Jerry’s bedroom. Liszt’s work presents a plethora of technical challenges and, by the end of the 19th century, it had become the unofficial gold standard through which each pianist could prove his or her prowess.
