Astronomical observations

The “Horizons: The Evolution of Astronomical Observations” exhibition running until Sept. 12 tells the story of the development of humans observing the sky. Visitors can admire the 100-gram lunar soil, more than 40 antique telescopes, reproductions of armillary spheres, as well as items from modern space exploration.

Animal Night

Shenzhen Safari Park is holding the Animal Night event on weekend nights throughout this summer. Visitors can see how animals, like tigers, kangaroos, leopards, fennec foxes and flamingos, behave at night and understand them more through staffers’ introduction. At 7:45 p.m., an actress will play a mermaid in a shark pool for eight minutes.

Hours: 6:30-9 p.m., weekends

Tickets: 59.9 yuan (valid until Aug. 29)

Nantou Ancient Town

Two streets inside the 1,700-year-old Nantou Ancient Town have been renovated with historical, art and design exhibitions, as well as restaurants and gift shops.

Sea World exhibitions

“The Mythical Animals in the Forbidden City: A Multimedia Exhibition of ‘Album of Beasts’” (55 yuan), running until Oct. 15, integrates ancient Chinese animal study, classic mythology and aesthetic art by digitizing 25 ancient fabled beasts into multimedia installations, making it possible for visitors to immerse themselves in a world of ancient Chinese creatures. Argentine conceptual artist Leandro Erlich has brought his 12 installations (or lighthearted games) for visitors to play with at “The Confines of the Great Void” (128 yuan) running until Nov. 7. You may find people hanging on the facade of a building or fully clothed people walk in a swimming pool. And “Values of Design: China in the Making” (68 yuan) is Design Society’s permanent exhibition exploring the growing field of Chinese design.
