S. Korean beers replacing Japanese brands

Global Economic News

SOUTH KOREAN consumers’ boycott of Japanese products, which began in July 2019 following Japan’s export control, has resulted in rising sales of South Korean beers.

Convenience stores across South Korean have seen continued decline in Japanese beer sales.

Industry analysts also attributed it to improvements in South Korean craft beer products, which have kept up with young people’s consumption habits and gained popularity among them.

Japanese beers, on the contrary, have been left behind by the new consumption trend among young people, who are the backbone consumers.

At 7-Eleven, sales of South Korean beers jumped 550.6 percent in the first half of this year from the same period last year. The trend is similar in other companies.

At CU, sales of South Korean craft beer rose 240.5 percent in the first half of this year from a year ago.

Sales of Japanese beer have been decreasing every year at GS25, with the rate hitting 90.2 percent year on year in 2020, and 91.2 percent in the first half of this year.
