REGIONAL authorities in the German city of Trier said that about 350 kilograms of World War II ammunition were discovered due to the recent floods in western Germany. The Directorate of Monitoring and Service in Trier stated to the German news agency that cartridges, hand grenades and fireworks were found. There were 22 discoveries of munitions last month in the Ahar Valley, which was severely affected by the floods. The ordnance clearance service in Rhineland-Palatinate destroyed the ammunition, an ADD spokeswoman explained. Heavy rains and subsequent flooding hit the states of North-Rhine Westphalia and Rhineland Palatinate in mid-July, leaving trails of devastation and a death toll of more than 180 people. Florian Stadfeld of Koblenz Police Headquarters said authorities were recommending that people exercise caution and report to police immediately when handling the discovered ammunition.
