A total of 124 left-behind children from across the country spent an enjoyable summer vacation in Shenzhen, participating in a rich variety of activities at the summer session held by the Shenzhen-based company Airmate, according to Shenzhen Special Zone Daily. The summer session, which began on July 19 and ended on August 20, provided an opportunity for these children to spend more time with their parents, as they are left behind in rural communities while their parents move to cities to look for higher-income jobs to support their families. The children, whose parents work for Airmate, come from Hunan, Shaanxi, Guizhou and Sichuan provinces. All the 10 college student volunteers serving as teachers at the session are also children of Airmate employees and five of them had participated in the company’s previous summer sessions. The summer session provides regular classes including painting, calligraphy, handicrafts, physics and chemistry, English, safety education, recitation, ancient poetry and dancing. African drumming and musical performance are the two new additions this year. Professional Taekwondo coaches, music teachers and African drum teachers were hired by the Bao’an District Federation of Trade Unions to teach the children. Meanwhile, six outings were organized during the summer session. The children visited the Party and masses service center of OH Bay, the Shenzhen Labor Museum and Airmate’s electrical products exhibition hall, experienced a moot court at Shiyan Court, and listened to Red Army stories told by an elderly Party member. Airmate has hosted the summer session for its employees’ children since 2009. Statistics showed that 145 training courses and seven special activities were held at the summer sessions, serving more than 50,000 people.(Zhang Yu) |
