On cyberspeak

Nowadays, the rapid expansion in netizens’ scale has rejuvenated our lives in many aspects. Cyberspeak, as a new form of language widely used among the netizens, has drawn great attention from the public. This new form of language does bring advantages like convenience and concision to us, while it still has downsides that cannot be neglected.

To begin with, cyberspeak comes from many sources online and is used in various forms, which would cause misunderstanding. The abbreviation is a common way to create internet jargon, but it is easily misunderstood because the limited length conveys more than one meaning in most cases. For instance, the expression “nsdd” has puzzled a lot of cyber citizens before. One may refer it to “you are right,” while others may find it offensive by interpreting it as “you are weak.” That kind of semantic fuzziness certainly created an information gap in communication. Similarly, gaps will appear as well when it comes to those who fail to catch up with the latest net jargon. On this occasion, cyberspeak is like any kind of fashion, updated at a rather high speed and producing anxiety for people who have trouble following the trend. With this, it is no longer rare to find negative emotions like awkwardness and inferiority aroused in conversations.

Apart from setting language barriers, internet terms also have the consequence of ignoring standardized expressions. According to a survey done by China Youth Daily, 76.5 percent of interviewees can sense that cyber language is impoverishing their vocabulary. As the internet era favors concrete and direct talk, we gradually get used to the convenience internet lingo brings. Meanwhile, not only convenience but also vulgarness occupied our speech, causing more and more gorgeous words and formalized expressions in the language system to die away. This suggests that selecting the essence and discarding the gross from cyberspeak is an urgent need.

As can be seen, it is fortunate for us to live in so immediate an era, where cyberspeak brought us lots of fun and convenience. But we still need to think twice before organizing our words using the net lingo.
