Ferrari goes electric with Testa Rossa J
    2021-09-08  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

The original Ferrari Testa Rossa is perhaps the most iconic racing car of the entire 1950s. The pontoon-fendered icon won the 24 Hours of Le Mans four times in different forms, but it was the original 1957 250 TR variant that showed the world what Ferrari’s very best could be.

In honor of that history, Ferrari has produced a limited recreation of the 1957 car. It comes with just two strange limitations: The cars are all-electric and built at a 75-percent scale.

The Testa Rossa J, which Ferrari calls a “junior car,” features about 90 kilometers of range on a single charge and can hit speeds of over 60 kilometers per hour in its sport and race settings. The range is just enough to recreate one lap of the Targa Florio course a 250 TR won at in 1958, while the speeds are about 210 kilometers per hour off Ferrari’s reported top speed from the original car.

The car was built in collaboration with the Little Car Company, but the design itself is based on archive drawings of the original car held in the Ferrari Classiche Department. Despite the car’s scale, it still boasts some serious mechanical pedigree. The pedals come straight off the F8 Tributo production line, the brakes come from Brembo, and the suspension was even fine-tuned at the legendary Fiorano test track. The body was formed by hand-beating aluminum, just like how Ferrari built the originals.

There are four drive modes — Novice, Comfort, Sport and Race — selected by a Manettino dial inspired by the 812 Superfast. Each one unleashes a different amount of maximum power extracted by the 48-volt motor and has a different top speed. Novice allows just 1 kW with a 20 kilometers per hour limit, while Race mode gives you access to all 12 kW and its maximum speed.

Back in 2011, an original 1957 250 TR sold at auction for US$16.4 million. At US$109,000, the Testa Rossa J is a relative bargain. The Little Car Company plans to build only 299 examples of the Testa Rossa J. A number of color options are available, some based on actual racing liveries. (SD-Agencies)
