Flights canceled, schools closed as typhoon approaches
    2021-09-14  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

ALL the passenger flights at Shanghai’s two airports were canceled yesterday as Typhoon Chanthu was forecast to go through or make a landfall on the eastern coastal region of the municipality between yesterday evening and night.

Shanghai first issued a warning for typhoon and rainstorm Sunday. The city’s meteorological authority said that the accumulated rainfall from yesterday to Thursday is expected to be between 200 and 400 millimeters. The heaviest rainfall in an hour can reach 50 to 80 millimeters.

Shanghai authorities have ordered all kindergartens as well as primary and middle schools to be suspended from yesterday afternoon through today.

Additionally, more than 120 tourist attractions in Shanghai are temporarily closed yesterday and today due to the typhoon. As of yesterday noon, famous spots including Shanghai Disney Resort, the Oriental Pearl Tower, the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum and the Shanghai Astronomy Museum had put up suspension notices online and offline.

At 5 p.m. yesterday, the center of Chanthu, the 14th typhoon of this year, moved to waters off southeastern Shanghai. It packed a gale of 42 meters per second, according to the National Meteorological Center.

Chanthu will linger at waters near the mouth of the Yangtze River today and tomorrow.

From 8 p.m. yesterday to 8 p.m. today, the typhoon will bring gale-force winds and rainstorms to regions including Shanghai, Zhejiang and Jiangsu.

Zhejiang has upgraded its emergency response to Chanthu to the highest level, closing schools as well as suspending air and rail services in several cities.

Education authorities in the cities of Ningbo, Zhoushan and Taizhou have ordered suspension of classes in kindergartens, primary and high schools, and off-campus training institutions yesterday or from yesterday to today.

The airport in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang, has canceled all outbound flights starting yesterday. The schedule of some trains running across Zhejiang has also been adjusted. (Xinhua, China Daily)
