Waste glassification plant THE country’s first plant immobilizing radioactive waste in glass has been officially put into operation in the city of Guangyuan, Sichuan Province, according to the China Atomic Energy Authority. A test run started Aug. 27 and the first tank of solidified glass was produced from radioactive waste liquid. The project headquarters stated that the facilities of the plant have met relevant operating conditions and deemed it fit to start formal operation from saturday. Wildlife seed bank THE wildlife germplasm bank in Southwest China has preserved 10,601 kinds of wild plant seeds, according to the Kunming Institute of Botany under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Founded in 2007, the seed bank affiliated to the institute includes seed pool, DNA bank, microbial bank, animal germplasm resource bank and other sectors. It is the only comprehensive preservation facility for the storage of wildlife germplasm resources in China and the largest wildlife germplasm pool in Asia. Fewer air trips THE national civil aviation industry saw a decline in the number of air trips and volume of mail and cargo in August amid a recent resurgence of COVID-19, official data showed yesterday. About 22.41 million passenger trips were made last month, a decrease of 51.5 percent from a year earlier, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) said at a press conference. The number of trips is about 36.6 percent of that recorded in the same period in 2019, the CAAC said. |
