Student athletes

Many young athletes have caught the eye at China’s 14th National Games. In addition to their outstanding performances, their status as student athletes has attracted wide attention.

Olympic shooting gold medalist Yang Qian, a student from Tsinghua University, became a trending topic during the National Games on social network Weibo. Her every move triggered an upsurge of attention. Gui Ruyi, a high school student from Hefei, capital city of East China’s Anhui Province, ran in the women’s 800m final in the National Games. Fencer Song Yue, 17, is also a student athlete, and reached the women’s foil last 32 at the Games.

Women and children

The State Council has unveiled outlines for the development of women and children for the next decade.

The outlines, which set goals and tasks for the development of women and children in the coming 10 years, will play a vital role in implementing the fundamental policy of gender equality and the principle of prioritizing the development of children, and will take the development of women and children to a higher level in the new era. By 2030, the policy of gender equality will be thoroughly implemented; women will have equal access to full life cycle health services, enjoy equal rights to education, equal economic rights and interests, and equal political rights, according to the Outline of Women’s Development in China (2021-2030).

Xinjiang population

The State Council Information Office on Sunday issued a white paper detailing the demographic development in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The white paper, titled “Xinjiang Population Dynamics and Data,” said over the past 70 years, Xinjiang has seen rapid and steady population growth, improving population quality, higher life expectancy, and faster urbanization and modernization. Xinjiang’s population growth from 2000 to 2020 was 1.15 percentage points higher than the national average in the compound annual growth rate, said the white paper. According to data from the sixth national census conducted in 2010, the population in Xinjiang was 21.82 million, an increase of 3.36 million over 2000.

Jiuzhaigou reopens

Jiuzhaigou, a famous scenic spot in Southwest China’s Sichuan Province, will fully reopen to visitors today.

It is over three years after a powerful earthquake hit it, local authorities said on Thursday. The quality of the scenery at Jiuzhaigou has been restored to pre-earthquake levels, and infrastructure at the site has improved, said Yan Sashuang, deputy head of the local culture and tourism department. The scenic spot has undergone comprehensive disaster assessment since the restoration and has been closely monitoring and managing all locations with high risks for geological hazards, said the site administration.(SD-Agencies)
