Zhongshan Middle School in Pingshan District was recently awarded the title “vanguard in ocean conservation” along with two other schools during the 17th Shenzhen World Clean Ocean Day event. With a launch ceremony at the Dongchong beach in Dapeng Peninsular, the event called for action to clean 260.5 kilometers of Shenzhen coastline. The school’s efforts in ocean preservation became known to the public in 2016, when a photo showed its students picking up garbage at beaches in eastern Shenzhen. In the same year, the school started to teach students a course in oceanic environment. Co-developed with the Shenzhen Blue Ocean Conservation Association, the course teaches about the knowledge of ocean resources and conservation. In the past five years, the school has organized students to clean the ocean coastline in more than a dozen venues, during which time students produced award-winning research reports and artworks in ocean conservation. The school is a designated education base for raising the awareness of ocean conservation in Guangdong Province. (Li Dan) |
