Five high school students from Shenzhen No.2 Experimental School claimed multiple prizes at the 38th Chinese Physics Olympiad that recently concluded, with one first, two second and two third prizes. The contest, first held in 1984 and hosted by the Chinese Physical Society, is the most influential physics contest for middle school students in China. First-prize winners of the contest will have the opportunity to participate in a physics camp organized by Tsinghua University and Peking University. The five winning students have studied at the school since junior high and have been attending courses designed for competitions. Before participating in the contest, they also received help from senior students who had prior experience with the contest. Wang Yangyi, who won first prize, said that winning the contest will help him with his college entrance exams. “Studying physics helps me improve my mental focus and the ability to think deeply,” said Wang. To help students better develop their strengths in different subjects, the school has set up a contest training center with a coaching team consisting of experienced teachers. According to Tao Jizhi, head of the training center, in addition to training courses, the center also organizes study trips during summer and winter vacations and invites university teachers to give lectures.
