FOLLOWING a successful first season and lukewarm second season, the Chinese period drama “Nirvana in Fire” will release its third season in 2024.

Unveiling its upcoming shows Friday, Chinese streaming giant iQiyi announced that filming is underway for “Nirvana in Fire 3.” Scheduled for a 2024 release, the third season will continue to explore the theme of individuals’ fate and family relationships set against the backdrop of political power struggles in ancient China.

Aired in 2015, historical drama “Nirvana in Fire” became a cultural phenomenon and elevated its lead actors Hu Ge and Wang Kai to dizzying heights of popularity. The show and its cast won six titles at the Golden Eagle Awards, Feitian Awards and Magnolia award, China’s top awards given to TV shows. Its success was reflected in 9.4 out of 10 points in Douban rating. While “Nirvana in Fire 2” also scored a high 8.5 despite mixed reviews, the second season didn’t win any of the three TV awards.

The official poster released shows an intertwining sword with a red silk fabric in an ink painting style. The anticipated third season will be helmed by the same production crew as its previous two installments, including original novel author and scriptwriter Hai Yan, main director Kong Sheng as well as assistant directors Liu Hongyuan and Sun Molong. Kong is praised for his recent work “Mining Town.”

The casting details for the third season have yet to be confirmed. Like its predecessors, the third season will be produced by Daylight Entertainment.
