    2021-11-02  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Sheng music

Young Chinese sheng player Xu Yan will give a concert of sheng music. The sheng is a Chinese mouth-blown free reed instrument consisting of vertical pipes. It is a polyphonic instrument and is enjoying increasing popularity as a solo instrument. It is one of the oldest Chinese instruments, with images depicting its kind dating back to 1100 B.C., and there are original instruments from the Han era that are preserved in museums today. Traditionally, the sheng has been used as an accompaniment instrument for solo suona or dizi performances. It is one of the main instruments in kunqu and other forms of Chinese opera. Traditional small ensembles also make use of the sheng, such as the wind and percussion ensembles in northern China. In the modern large Chinese orchestra, it is used for both melody and accompaniment.

Woodwind quintet

Five musicians from the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, Rao Dan (flute), Han Zhiyin (French horn), Yi Cheng (clarinet), Cui Xiaozheng (oboe) and Wang Bingchen (bassoon), will play Franz Ignaz Danzi’s “Woodwind Quintet No. 1” and “Woodwind Quintet No. 2.”

Danzi (1763-1826) was a German cellist, composer and conductor. He lived at a significant time in the history of European music.

His career, spanning the transition from the late Classical to the early Romantic styles, coincided with the origin of much of the music that lives in our concert halls and is familiar to contemporary classical music audience members.

Danzi’s chamber music includes sextets, quintets, quartets and trios, some for strings, some for wind instruments and some for a combination of the two.

Having had a gift for writing melodies, Danzi lavished considerable care on his quintets.
