Students unleash creativity in paintings

Impressive paintings by Shenzhen Tianjian Primary School students are on display through December 12 at the Century Place shopping plaza in Huaqiangbei, as part of the annual “I’m Learning Painting From Masters” public art education project initiated by the Guan Shanyue Art Museum.

The museum invited local students to imitate late Chinese master Guan Shanyue’s paintings under the instruction of their fine art teachers and the museum’s artists.

The 80 exhibited students’ paintings were selected from pieces by 400 students who learned from Guan’s paintings at the “Along With the People: Guan Shanyue’s Paintings Around 1949” exhibition in the museum.

Many students didn’t directly copy Guan’s paintings; instead they created from their own imaginations and gave new renditions of Guan’s art; some even incorporated an illustration style into their paintings.

“Appreciating original paintings in a real museum setting and sensing the masters’ inspirations can yield valuable results for children,” said Chen Junyu, deputy director of the Guan Shanyue Art Museum.

“Opportunities for hands-on experimenting with painting materials allow children to extend their knowledge of art and learn multiple-perspective thinking.”

At the exhibition opening on Saturday, students from Shenzhen Tianjian Primary School confidently performed singing, dancing and playing of wind and string music pieces.
