MoU signed to help reduce plastic use
    2021-11-19  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE Shenzhen Municipal Ecology Environment Bureau signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Basel Convention Regional Center for Asia and the Pacific at a plastic reduction experience exchange meeting held in the city Wednesday.

The MoU focuses on a China-Norway project to improve capacity for managing marine waste plastics and microplastics.

The project aims to improve China’s waste plastics and microplastics pollution prevention and control capacity through activities like source identification, environmental impact assessment and fate analysis, pollution monitoring technology and tool development, policy research and awareness improvement, to provide policy and technical support for waste plastics management in China.

Shenzhen has been designated as a demonstration city for the China-Norway project to increase its international influence, as per the MoU.

The Basel Convention Regional Center for Asia and the Pacific will carry out investigation and research on Shenzhen’s marine plastic pollution and support the evaluation of the city’s plastic ban.

Based on the China-Norway project, the center plans to invite relevant institutions in Shenzhen to participate in national or regional projects funded by international funds.

The city’s ecology environment bureau will coordinate relevant institutions to provide necessary data and information for the life cycle assessment of plastic packaging and agricultural films, the implementation effect assessment of Shenzhen’s plastic ban policy and the BAT/BEP effect assessment of plastic waste reduction.

The MoU signing is an important event in Shenzhen’s construction of a waste-free city, according to the bureau.

Environmental protection has always been Shenzhen’s priority, and with the strong support of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the city took the lead in building a national waste-free city and successfully completed all of its pilot tasks.

The city’s safe disposal capacity for various solid wastes has been increased to 65,000 tons per day, and the recylcing capacity has been increased to 140,000 tons per day, more than double the amount before the pilot projects.
