FOUR professors working in Shenzhen including three from the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) and one from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-Shenzhen) have been selected as new members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE).

According to China’s top academic institutions for sciences and engineering’s 2021 new member enrollment list released Thursday, Xia Keqing and Efim Zelmanov from SUSTech were selected member and foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; while Xu Zhenghe from SUStech and Luo Zhiquan from CUHK-Shenzhen were selected foreign members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Xia is chair professor and director of SUSTech Center for Complex Flows and Soft Matter Research Department of Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering. He started to work in SUSTech in September 2018. Xia was elected fellow of the American Physical Society in 2010 and received a Croucher Senior Research Fellowship in 2005.

Zelmanov, the Fields Prize winner in 1994, worked as director of SUSTech International Center for Mathematics since the center was inaugurated in October 2019. Zelmanov, a Russian-American mathematician, is known for his work on combinatorial problems in nonassociative algebra and group theory, including his solution for the restricted Buyrnside problem.

Xu was chair professor of SUSTech’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering and founding dean of the Department of Engineering. His research is in the interfacial science and surface chemistry as applied to natural resources processing and utilization.

Luo now serves as the vice president (academic) of CUHK-Shenzhen, and concurrently the director of Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data. Luo’s research mainly addresses mathematical issues in information sciences, with particular focus on the design, analysis and applications of optimization algorithms.

The list released by the two academies included 149 new members, including 45 foreign experts, with seven from Guangdong Province.

CAS welcomed 65 new academicians, including five female scientists. CAE has added 84 new members, including six women and 20 from overseas.

Membership of the CAS and CAE is China’s highest academic title in science and engineering and is a lifelong honor. New members are selected every two years.
