CNOOC Ltd. yesterday announced the commencement of production of its Lufeng oil fields’ regional development project as the Lufeng 14-4, one of the oil fields included in the project, was put into operation yesterday.

The Lufeng 14-4 oil field’s platform is 218 meters tall and weighs 30,000 tons. It is China’s largest independently designed and constructed offshore crude oil production platform.

This was also the country’s first attempt to develop deep and low permeability oil field more than 3,000 meters deep in the South China Sea.

The platform can handle 28,000 barrels of crude oil and 84,000 cubic meters of associated gas in a full production day, and provides more natural gas and oil resources to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), CNOOC said.

Apart from the Lufeng 14-4 oil field, the Lufeng oil fields, located in eastern South China Sea, also embraces the Lufeng 14-8, the Lufeng 15-1 and the Lufeng 22-1 oil fields, with an average water depth of about 140-330 meters.

The project’s main production facilities include two drilling production platforms and one subsea production system. A total of 35 development wells have been planned to be put into production, including 26 production wells and nine water injection wells. The project is expected to achieve its peak production of approximately 46,000 barrels of crude oil per day in 2023.

Xia Qinglong, president of the company, said: “The project adopts an integrated model of exploration, development and production, which maximized the asset value of oil fields region, meanwhile the safe commencement of production also safeguarded energy supply throughout the GBA.”
