Young readers’ area reopens at SZ Library
    2021-12-01  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

The young readers’ area, serving those under 13, reopened on Saturday at the Shenzhen Library after an upgrade and expansion.

Separated into three parts, the area has added 60 percent more seats to accommodate nearly 200 youngsters sitting and reading in a space measuring nearly 1,000 square meters.

A “Fun House,” equipped with all types of educational toys and books made of various materials like wood and cloth, has been turned into a paradise for kids under 3. The area is also equipped with a baby care room where moms can breastfeed or change their kids’ diapers.

A picture book area, occupying an area of more than 200 square meters, offers some 70 seats and well-selected books for kids aged 4 to 6. Many of the books in the area have won the Caldecott Medal, the Hans Christian Andersen Award and other honors.

Another area serves children aged 7 to 12.

With spacious rooms, warm décor and furniture made of safe materials, this area provides a safe haven for young readers to learn and have fun.

On the day of the opening, two fun activities were held to entertain kids. One incorporated a magic show with book reading; the other invited children to guess the names of picture books based on the clues provided. The first 50 lucky young readers who signed up for a library card were each gifted with a souvenir.

Saturday also marked the launch of a “Reading in Late Fall” campaign. Twenty young readers who borrowed the largest number of books from the library network in the past year were awarded with trophies and certificates, while the top two “reading stars” shared stories about how books enriched their lives.

The young readers’ area allows a maximum of 300 visitors simultaneously in accordance with COVID fighting regulations. Those aged 13 and above can apply for an adult library card. (Li Dan)
