Three concerts will be held this week at Shenzhen Concert Hall, bringing the best of Mozart as well as Chinese artistic songs and film music.

Mozart night

The opening concert for the Seventh Shenzhen Mozart Music Week will be held this Thursday, bringing six pieces from the classical master.

Helmed by young conductor Jin Yukuang, the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra (SZSO) will perform excerpts from four Mozart concertos and two symphonies. Pianists Liu Liu and Fang Wanru, clarinetists Zhai Xingxing and Yi Cheng, horn players Xu Yiqi and Jin Zhicheng, oboist Cui Xiaozheng and bassoonist Xie Mingjing will collaborate.

The program will include the first movement of “Concerto for Two Pianos in E-flat Major,” the second and third movements of “Piano Concerto No. 26 in D Major,” the first movement of “Clarinet Concerto in A Major” (with Zhai as soloist), the first movement of “Horn Concerto No. 3 in E-flat Major” (with Jin Zhicheng, a talented music student, as soloist), “Sinfonia Concertante in E-flat Major” and the first movement of “Symphony No. 40 in G Minor.”

One of only two minor key symphonies Mozart wrote and one of his most performed works, “Symphony No. 40 in G Minor” is tragic in tone and intensely emotional. It’s lyrical, melancholy and exciting in various parts.

Jin Yukuang, born in 2000, was the first runner-up at both the Khachaturian International Conducting Competition and the Only Stage International Conducting Competition in this June.

Choral concert

Conducted by Luo Shenka and accompanied by pianist Chen Yun, the SZSO Chamber Choir will perform melodious Chinese artistic songs.

The program will include “Touched by Spring Breeze,” a Taiwanese song composed in the 1930s, “Yue Ethnic Song,” “The Joy of a Snow Flake” with lyrics by poet Xu Zhimo and music by Zhou Xinquan, and many other melodious Chinese songs based on classical Chinese poems.

Luo, a teacher with Xinghai Conservatory of Music, graduated from the China Conservatory of Music and furthered his studies in choral conducting in Italy, learning with composer, conductor and violinist Lorenzo Donati.

Chen, who graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Music and Xinghai Conservatory of Music with degrees in both piano performance and conducting, is a teacher at his alma mater in Guangzhou.

Film music

Conducted by Qu Xin, the Changchun Film Studio Orchestra will perform beloved music scores from both Chinese and Hollywood movies. Soprano Fang Meihua, tenor Wang Li and singer Liu Ting will collaborate.

Audience members will hear “My Heart Will Go On,” “I Love You, China,” Italian folk song “O Sole Mio,” “Let’s Drink From the Joyful Cups” by Verdi, as well as the scores from “Aladdin,” “Driving Miss Daisy” and “Braveheart.”
