HK Film Show to open in town

Nine classic and new Hong Kong movies will be shown at the Broadway Cinematheque Shenzhen in Nanshan District. The Hong Kong Film Show event will also be held at other Broadway cinemas in Guangzhou and Foshan.

‘Anita’ (2021)

Plot: “Anita” starring model Louise Wong and actor Louis Koo is based on the life of legendary Hong Kong singer Anita Mui (1963-2003) who made major contributions to the Cantopop music industry in the 1980s and 1990s. She remained a superstar throughout her career, and is regarded as the “daughter of Hong Kong” due to her passion for her work.

Time: 7:20 p.m., Dec. 30, Jan. 11

‘Rouge’ (1987)

Plot: Stanley Kwan’s award-winning film about a ghost (Anita Mui) looking to reunite with her long lost love (Leslie Cheung) is a certifiable Hong Kong movie classic. Based on the novel by Lillian Lee, “Rouge” is part mystery and part a “Romeo and Juliet”-style romance. The film cuts back and forth from the 1930s Hong Kong to some 50 years later.

Time: 7:30 p.m., Dec. 31; 7 p.m., Jan. 23

‘One Second Champion’ (2020)

Plot: A single father (Endy Chow) becomes gifted with the power of seeing one second into the future. When his ability is exposed, a boxing buff persuades him to use his power in the boxing ring. Director Chiu Sin-hang combines the boxing genre with a refreshing dash of fantasia in his thrilling solo directorial effort.

Time: 4 p.m., Jan. 3; 7:20 p.m., Jan. 19

‘Time’ (2021)

Plot: Once famous for his quick blade, a retired assassin can no longer earn a living with his cut-throat skills. Summoned again, he partners with his chauffeur to carry out special missions, fulfilling the wishes of old people looking to kill themselves. When commissioned by a young girl who has been deserted by her parents and lover, the “Elderly Angel” squad finds an arresting way to complete its task. The cast includes Tse Yin, Suet Lam and Bobo Fung.

Time: 2 p.m., Jan. 3; 1 p.m., Jan. 22

‘Ladies Market’ (2021)

Plot: Directed by Kwan Wing-chung, the film revolves around a group of people connected by a boy who was abandoned by his illegal immigrant father. The cast includes Ron Ng, Annie Liu and Liu Kai-chi.

Time: 7:30 p.m., Jan. 4; 9:15 p.m., Jan. 19

‘Lion Rock’ (2019)

Plot: Lai Chi-wai, one of the top rock climbers in Asia, loses everything when a motorcycle accident takes away his ability to walk. Rather than succumbing to his fate, Lai finds his own way of scaling those dizzying peaks again. The cast includes Michelle Wai and Alex Lam.

Time: 7:30 p.m., Jan. 5, Jan. 20

‘Till We Meet Again’ (2019)

Plot: Ma Chun-wai plays a salesman who leads a solitary life and lives in hope of seeing his mother (Josephine Koo), long estranged; a visit to a psychiatrist reveals all is not as it seems.

Time: 7:30 p.m., Jan. 6, Jan. 21

‘Homecoming’ (1984)

Plot: Coral (Josephine Koo), a Hong Kong woman tortured by city life, goes back to her home town in Guangdong to visit her old friend (Siqin Gaowa). They both finds that some precious things in life that disappear through the years can never be recovered.

Time: 7:30 p.m., Jan. 7; 4:30 p.m., Jan. 23

‘I Still Remember’ (2019)

Plot: Physical education teacher Mr. Wong maintains he is a man of his word to his late wife by committing to running his first 10-km race. Meanwhile, his former student Chi, inspired by an overweight girl’s efforts to slim down so she can run with her idol, starts running at a time when his career in real estate career is floundering, as he wonders what to do with his life. The movie is an uplifting sports drama finding its protagonists at turning points in their lives as they seek to find purpose and keep promises. The cast includes Patrick Tam and Tony Wu.

Time: 7:30 p.m., Jan. 18; 3 p.m., Jan. 22
