Police officer shot in head while sleeping in car
    2022-01-05  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

AN NYPD officer is recovering after being shot in the head while sleeping in his own vehicle at a Harlem precinct Saturday morning.

NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell and Mayor Eric Adams provided an update on the early morning shooting Saturday, which involved a seven-year veteran of the force who underwent surgery. Officials said they were “very lucky” the shooting didn’t have a different outcome.

“We must find the person who discharged weapon, and find those who believe they will destroy New York city with gun and gang violence,” said Adams, who took a hard line on guns and gangs throughout the press conference. According to police, the officer ended his shift at 2:30 a.m. after working an for eight hours at a Central Park event. He returned to the 25th Precinct, located at 120 East 119th St., and decided to rest in his vehicle before he was due to return to work at 7 a.m.

Police said a bullet came through the vehicle’s rear window and hit the officer in the head. He later woke up around 6:15 a.m. due to rain coming through the broken window, and noticed head pain caused by the shot.

An on-duty officer saw the officer and noticed blood coming from his head, according to the NYPD commissioner, and rendered aid.

He was taken to a hospital and underwent surgery, where doctors determined he suffered a fractured skull and had bullet fragments removed. He is now recovering and was visited by NYPD officials and Adams, who said the officer is “doing well.”

Officers said it was unclear if the officer was targeted, but said the bullet appeared to be fired from a “significant distance.”

A doctor said the bullet was millimeters away from doing damage to “vital structures.”

Police have offered a US$10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case. (SD-Agencies)
