When old guzheng meets new media
    2022-01-13  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Think the guzheng is an old instrument played only by masters for a quiet atmosphere? You’re sure to have your mind changed by Yu Miao, as she will collaborate with visual artist and new media producer Wang Meng for a night of a new media show.

Yu not only studied the guzheng, considered a staple of classical Chinese music, at the prestigious China Conservatory of Music, but also pushes its sounds to new, modern heights, performing alongside some of China’s top electronica producers. Seriousness and emotion, coldness and sensitivity, fantasy and reality, modern and classical concepts, all blend and collide when Wang and Yu conjure their unique sonic experience.

Creating a dialogue between the acoustic sounds of the guzheng and the atmospheric and textual pull of electronic music, it is a perfect match that floods the senses. While a lot of the details will be improvised on the spot, the trust between the two performers grounds their sound, creating a lushly organic, delicate and transcendent dialogue between tradition and modernity.
