SOUTHERN University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) ranked 13th in the world on the THE (Times Higher Education) Young University Rankings 2022, up from the 26th place in 2021, a report released by THE showed Tuesday.

SUSTech maintained its position as the best young university on the Chinese mainland this year and it is the fourth time for SUSTech to be listed in the THE Young University Rankings.

The THE Young University Rankings list the world’s best universities that are 50 years old or younger. The evaluation is based on 13 performance indicators and the universities are judged across all their core missions – teaching (30 percent), research (30 percent), citations (30 percent), international outlook (7.5 percent) and industry income (2.5 percent).

This year, the rankings list 539 universities from 74 countries and territories.

For the first time, Paris Sciences et Lettres – PSL Research University Paris was named the world’s best young university, with last year’s frontrunner Nanyang Technological University, Singapore dropping to second place.

Hong Kong has three institutions in the top 10, more than any other territories; while France has five institutions in the top 20, the most represented country in the group. The Netherland’s Erasmus University Rotterdam is the highest new entry in the ranking at fourth place.

India and Turkey have overtaken the U.K. to become the most represented countries overall, with 40 institutions each. The U.K. shared third place with Iran with 37 universities.
